The National Environment Agency (NEA) has released details for Phase 9 of the Choa Chu Kang Chinese Cemetery exhumation exercise.
Families with affected graves are encouraged to submit their claims for the remains by 30 April 2026, with exhumation works scheduled to commence after June 2026. More details are available via the official website.

Site Survey

The gravesite is surveyed, identified, and readied for exhumation. This process is carried out by trained personnel from NEA or appointed private contractors.

Permit Application

Following the site survey, families are required to submit their registration and obtain the necessary permits through NEA. This is a compulsory step to ensure the exhumation is carried out in accordance with regulations and must be completed before any further arrangements can be made.

Ground Breaking Ceremony (Optional)

Such ceremonies can involve prayers, blessings, or rituals led by a priest, monk, or other religious officiant. Vendors or appointed representatives may also help to organise and carry out these arrangements.

Exhumation Process

Trained personnel will carefully excavate the grave, recover the remains, and open the casket if required. Families may also participate in bone-collection rituals in line with their cultural or religious traditions.

Cremation or Reinterment

The recovered remains can be cremated, with the ashes subsequently housed in a columbarium or handled according to the family’s wishes. Alternatively, the remains may be interred again at a different burial site.

Final Prayers and Closure (Optional)
